This week, we’re very happy to share a giveaway with the beautiful Love Tea brand, created by Emma Watson, naturopath. In this article she tells us about how much caffeine we find in a cup of tea.
“Love tea, but worried about your caffeine intake? It’s a common practice for people to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee as part of their daily routine, therefore, it’s important to be aware of how much caffeine you’re consuming. Caffeine has been linked to alertness, elevated mood and increased metabolism; however, when consumed in excess there can have negative effects such as feelings of anxiety and difficulty sleeping.
Is there caffeine in tea?
The amount of caffeine in tea can vary significantly between the type of tea and the strength of the brew. All teas from the Camellia sinensis plant contain caffeine, including white tea, green tea and black tea.
These teas also contain the amino acid L-theanine, which works to moderate the release of caffeine into our system more slowly. Caffeine from coffee, on the other hand, is released quickly, giving you a rush and then more of a sudden let down as it wears off.
So although both tea and coffee contain caffeine, the way they are received in the body is very different.
Is there more caffeine in tea or coffee?
Yes, there is more caffeine in coffee than tea. If you are trying to reduce the amount of caffeine you’re consuming, it is ideal to make the switch from coffee to tea. As a general rule, you can enjoy two cups of black tea for every cup of coffee.
What is the caffeine content in tea?
The exact quantity of caffeine in each type of tea varies depending on multiple variables, including growing methods, location, the quantity used, time it’s brewed for and water temperature.
To assist you in making an informed decision about your caffeine intake, we have put together a list of our camellia sinensis teas and their approximate caffeine content:
If you would prefer to completely avoid caffeine, there is a wide choice of herbal teas which do not contain any caffeine, giving your body a break from the stimulation caffeine can cause.
If you would like to start trying some more caffeine free tea options, we have an extensive selection on our website including our Wellness range and our Herbal range.
Is there more caffeine in loose leaf or pyramid tea bags?
Some tea brands use a different grade of tea in their tea bags, which means there is a difference in the caffeine strength between tea bags and loose leaf.
At Love Tea, we were very conscious of this factor when we designed our pyramid tea bags and wanted to ensure we used whole leaf tea rather than a finer grade of tea leaves.
We chose to use a biodegradable soilon mesh for our pyramid tea bags, which is not only plastic free, but the bag has been designed to hold a larger quantity of tea and larger leaf size. This allows us to use the same grade tea as we use in our loose leaf options, so the ingredients are exactly the same, throughout our loose leaf and pyramid tea bag range.”
